Avoiding expensive mistakesDetermining kitchen islands costs are one of the top mistakes homeowners make during a kitchen remodel. Poor design, attempting to buy and install the island without help from professionals, and obstructing work flow can all drive up kitchen island cost and reduce homeowner happiness with the remodel. One strategy is for the homeowner to invest in an inexpensive (toward that $120 end of kitchen island costs) kitchen cart to identify size, functionality and placement of the ideal kitchen island. At two percent of the typical high-end cost, the investment in a temporary “trial-run” kitchen island can pay off handsomely. Whether homeowners content themselves with the inexpensive rolling cart from a home improvement store or indulge in the services of professional interior designers, cabinetmakers and contractors, most families find their new kitchen island to be well worth the price. Kitchen island prices can’t reflect the value of increased family time gathered around the new kitchen island.

Add an island if there’s room. Let’s face it, people love to hang out in the kitchen — especially when there’s something cooking that smells delicious. For families a kitchen island can help make the kitchen a space where everyone can gather and spend time. Space and kitchen layout will impact your island’s efficiency, so it’s not for everyone.

The size of the kitchen island you wish to purchase is an important factor that will determine the overall cost for the project. But before you choose the size, decide where you want the island to be placed and measure the space. Besides the size, also take into consideration the shape. This way you’ll have the parameters to look for when searching for the perfect island.

At a minimum, an island adds counter and storage space just where you need them: at the pivot point between your kitchen’s cooking, cleaning, and food-prep zones. And outfitted with fixtures and appliances, such as a sink and cooktop, or bar stools for dining, an island itself can become the hub of activity. Such utility is the reason builders and designers say that adding an island offers more bang for your buck than just about any other kitchen upgrade.

Each personal touch adds to the cost of kitchen island design, construction and installation. Adding a sink, for example, means the services of a plumber; adding a gas range requires running a gas supply line. An HVAC contractor is needed to add additional cooktop ventilation either above or down through the island (downdraft ventilation).

Install a granite countertop? On a budget? Absolutely, Cindy says. “Granite has really become very cost-effective,” Cindy notes. Of course, to keep costs down, the budget-minded homeowner will have to make some smart choices. First, she says, consider replacing only a portion of your countertop. “Put the biggest wow factor on your island,” she advises. “Mixing finishes is the hottest thing going.” Other cost-cutting tips include going with basic black rather than that exotic tropical green, and searching the local supply yards for remnants, which are significantly cheaper. New, thin-cut slabs are more budget-friendly than thick pieces. And by selecting a very simple edge treatment and replacing the custom-cut granite backsplash with self-installed granite tiles, a homeowner can get the look of a million-dollar kitchen for less than a grand.

Susan Kaplan More than 1 year ago If you use these estimates  listed here, you will feel like you got ripped off. I had my kitchen done in 2015 by a reputable kitchen design company and paid in the 40K range and I consider it to be a mid-price range kitchen. I had a door moved and part of two walls removed, all new lighting, new ceramic tiled floor, new drywall, new sink and faucet and added extra cabinets, all semi-custom cherry, with first level granite counter tops and mid range appliances. Pulled permits for electrical and plumbing with licensed professionals. The cost of the labor, for one worker, which was half of the total cost, took 10 weeks.

If at all possible, try to avoid moving your gas lines. It’s expensive and ups the total cost of your kitchen remodel. Unless you’re planning to move your oven and stove cooktop to an entirely differently place in your kitchen — which shouldn’t be necessary in most remodels — you should be able to avoid this cost. The process involves moving and running additional gas lines in a kitchen, plus you have to upend flooring and knock out walls to get to the gas line. You will also have to acquire a permit to mess with natural gas lines. So, just avoid it unless absolutely necessary.

Adding fixtures such as a cooktop, dishwasher, or sink to the island will require you to hire a plumber and/or electrician at added cost. Other odds and ends to consider include molding (installed where the island meets the flooring), bar stools, and cabinet hardware.

When estimating the cost of a kitchen remodel, there are various factors to keep in mind. The most important are budget, longevity, and what other homeowners in the neighborhood are doing with their kitchens. By planning a remodel around these factors, it’s possible to come out with a kitchen that meets expectations, lasts for a long time and will recoup the majority of its original cost in the resale.

Like regular kitchen countertops, island countertops can be surfaced with budget material such as laminate or tile or more high-end materials like stone or wood. Both style and function should be considered when selecting a countertop material. For example, if you’re adding the countertop mainly for food prep, a butcher block or granite top makes sense. Marble, on the other hand, is primarily decorative, while quartz or solid surface strikes a compromise. An island can incorporate multiple materials for maximum utility.
