Refinishing Formica The classic chrome 1950s kitchen table typically featured a Formica or laminate top. To restore laminate table tops, use a simple epoxy to secure any loose or peeling laminate. Fill small chips using a laminate repair kit, or mask these voids using two crayons that are roughly the same color as the laminate. Fill the hole using the lighter crayon, then add a layer of the darker crayon to help conceal the damage. The Formica Company lists a number of recommended cleaners, including lemon oil, that can be used to shine and restore laminate. If the top is badly damaged, consider covering it with a new sheet of laminate. Clean the surface with a solvent to remove grease and oil, then sand to roughen up the laminate. Use contact adhesive to add a layer of laminate to the table top, then roll out air bubbles and secure the surface using a laminate roller.

At any given time we stock about a dozen genuine 50’s dinette sets. Most of our Formica tables have been restored to near-original condition. Just to restore the top surface is an intense 8 step process, which takes about 6 hours to complete. Most tables also have an aluminum side apron (or band). That is also cleaned and polished to a high gloss shine. The chrome table legs and chair frames are cleaned and polished. Chair frames are often re-welded underneath to assure another 50 years of service. Many tables have re-chromed original legs. When our chairs are re-upholstered (using original style cracked ice vinyl), we also replace the padding, dust cover (under the seat), and chrome trim tacks (if applicable). Original style (oval head, slotted) stainless steel screws are also installed to maintain original appearance, and be maintenance free. We can also re-cover your existing chairs, and/or restore your table. Call or email for details and prices.    We can also mix and match tables and chairs. If you like a particular table, and want a different set of chairs, just ask for a revised price.

And get this: Available laminate table tops today include discontinued Formica boomerangs in aqua, coral and blue! All the glossy finish stock is gone, you can only get matte, but hey! Seems like Accro grabbed up a bunch when it was discontinued and still can put it on their tables. They also have nice vinyl options for the chairs.

High-pressure laminate of the ’50s (Arborite, Formica, etc.) was available mainly in a high gloss finish, which was susceptible to scratching from dishes, appliances, and normal everyday use. Today the laminates we obtain have suede finishes or protective surfaces which are much more durable and scratch resistant.

Classic 1950s chrome kitchen sets lend a vintage charm to modern homes. Unfortunately, many antique chrome tables and chairs show their age in the form of rusty legs, peeling laminate and cracked or dirty seats. The secret to successful chrome restoration lies in removing rust and dirt without scratching the shiny metal surface of your table and chair legs. Chrome tables and chairs in fairly good condition can be cleaned using a simple cheesecloth dipped in a mild detergent, like liquid dish soap. Remove stains using a soft cloth dipped in baby oil, then wipe clean with a damp rag. Tackle rust on chrome chairs or tables using a piece of crumpled aluminum foil to gently brush rust away. If you’re faced with heavy rust and corrosion, try dipping the foil in warm water or vinegar for greater effect.
